A Government paper entitled “Life Sciences 2010 – Delivering the Blueprint” was published in January this year, marking the start of a year highlighting the achievements and potential of the UK’s Life Sciences sector. Following on from a blueprint paper released in the summer of 2009, the Office of Life Sciences is re-asserting its support of the industry and its hopes to increase inward investment, making the UK one of the leading Life Sciences destinations in the world.
The document focuses on several areas, including industry collaboration through the UK Life Sciences Super Cluster, a programme supporting regenerative medicine research, plans to increase the skills and knowledge base for Life Sciences graduates and a Patent Box, which is designed to maintain the UK’s competitive edge by reducing the rate of corporation tax payable on income derived from patents. It is hoped that the Patent Box, the details of which are still to be debated, will encourage companies to innovate and file for patents in the UK.
UK Trade & Investment has a number of events planned throughout 2010 to promote the UK Life Sciences sector, including a series of high-level road shows in the USA and a major event in the autumn alongside the NHS Innovation Expo.
