HP Files Trade Mark Application for iPad Competitor

Where Apple goes, many others follow and the trend for touch screen pads is only just beginning. HP has filed a trade mark application in the USA for the word “PalmPad”, leading commentators to speculate on how close the company may be to releasing a tablet-style multimedia device that will rival the iPad. HP’s application gives nothing away, and certainly isn’t specific about the type of device that might carry the name. In fact, the application lists a number of devices that the “PalmPad” name may be applied to, including “portable computers, handheld and mobile computers, PDAs, electronic notepads, mobile electronic devices.”
iPad sales have been high since the device was released for sale, first in the USA and then across the world, but electronics experts always like to see a competitor, because that encourages manufacturers to push the boundaries of technology and consumers often see a reduction in price. Although there’s no sign of a “PalmPad” device from HP at the moment, the application to trade mark the name suggests that an iPad competitor could be just around the corner. HP recently acquired the Palm WebOS, which is likely to form the backbone of any pad offering the company develops, suggesting that rivalry between the two products could eventually be very keen indeed.
