Emma Kirkpatrick

Emma Kirkpatrick

Trade Mark Attorney

BA (Hons) GDL, MCITMA, CTMA

Emma graduated with a law degree from Staffordshire University in 2017 and qualified as a trade mark attorney in 2020. She has previously been a primary school teacher, worked in hospitality and administrative roles, but it was working as an IP and trade mark paralegal that inspired and started her on the path to becoming a trade mark attorney.

Emma later joined SH&P in September 2023 and is a key member of our Trade Marks team. Her work involves advising businesses on brand strategy, working on a variety of contentious and non-contentious trade mark matters and providing trade mark portfolio management services, such as trade mark clearance searches, filing and prosecution. She has worked with a range of businesses from different industries, such as fashion, cybersecurity, cosmetics, IT, marine technology and food and drink. She provides IP mentoring to local innovation hubs and volunteers for CITMA’s free advice clinics.

In her spare time, Emma enjoys reading, cooking, baking and gardening as well as walking Baxter, her very pampered pup and the apple of her eye.

More about Emma...

What interests you about intellectual property?

What drew me into wanting to be a Trade Mark Attorney was how diverse an area of law IP is. When I started out, I used to sit within the Commercial team at a different law firm, and while the solicitors around me would spend their days drafting contracts, I would be advising on brand strategy, IP protection, getting involved in contentious matters – no day is ever the same as a Trade Mark Attorney.

Your favourite place?

I’ve not travelled a lot, but j’adore Paris! It’s such a beautiful, vibrant place.

Your favourite drink?

Other than coffee (see below), it would be a nice Malbec or Pinot Noir.

Your favourite film?

Titanic – I watched it 12 times at the cinema (back in 1998) and have watched it countless times since! I always cry at the end!

Do you have any pets?

My beautiful Jackapoo, Baxter.

What can't you live without?

My husband, Baxter, coffee and books.

Something unusual/interesting about you that people may not know?

When I was at university, back in the 90’s, I had a couple of interesting Summer holiday jobs (Court Attendant at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and a Server at the Buckingham Palace Garden Parties) and all year round I had a Saturday job on the Golden Gate at Twickenham Rugby Ground (now the Allianz Stadium) checking tickets.

At Captain Fawcett Ltd, we have now been working with SH&P for over a year and have been absolutely thrilled with the care and attention to detail we have been given. In particular, with the commitment and extra mile that Emma Kirkpatrick always goes. Her global expertise and ability to think strategically, no matter what market, has ensured our global IP requirements are always carefully considered and aligned with our internal business growth strategy. The combination of professionalism and friendliness they give us means they are a pleasure to work with and we look forward to continuing a long-standing fruitful relationship together.
